I went back and looked at the stats from 77, 78, and 79 to see if I actually remembered correctly, or if Alzheimers had started to set in.

In 77 Shealy as a backup had about half as many carries in the Wishbone as Rutledge did as the starter, although Shealy didn't pass very often. And you can see from the game recaps that Shealy got playing time in close games against good teams. In 78 Shealy's snaps compared to Rutledge go up even more. And in 79, after Rutledge graduated and with Shealy now a senior, Bryant does the same thing with Don Jacobs, giving him frequent playing time every game.
