If Coach Saban coaches the DBs, why are they our biggest weakness?

We never had a second cornerback opposite Belue. Belue played this whole year injured, so even our best cornerback was not great.

Why did we struggle so much if this is Saban's specialty? Before anyone brings up starting first year players, I watched both Florida and LSU have success starting freshman corners.

So what is the deal?

No dominant lineman to rush the passer. The pass rush was beyond pathetic this year.

ETA: A 6'0", 220 lb. linebacker abused our line last night. I don't know if we need to move toward speed on the ends instead of size, but the game seems to be changing and Saban is getting left behind.

Florida had success with Vernon Hargraves there was a reason he had 5 stars by his name.

And Chavis's system is so simplified a brain dead chimp could learn it. And its also why the phrase "Third and Chavis" was invented.

Young corners typically don't look good (elite talents like Hargraves notwithstanding). Do you remember how bad some of our guys looked as Freshman only to be all American's as juniors/seniors? Guys you may have heard of like Kirkpatrick, Milliner, Jackson, even Marquis Johnson. I mean Eddie Jackson probably looked the best of any freshman Corner that has played under Saban.

We play press man for a reason. Its hard for young guys to pick up but boy can it shut down offenses when its firing at all cylinders.

I understand the frustration. They usually go and sign a really good juco cb to help. But, we won 11 games with the guys we have. It's not like we can't stop anybody. We are so spoiled as a fan base. Pass rush, I get so tired of hearing how we can't runs the passer. Bama has won 3 NC out of 4 yrs not being able to rush the passer? As a fan, I'll take that. We have the best coach in the business. Is saban perfect? No. But I sure wouldn't swap him for any coach in the last 20yrs. Sometimes u just get beat by somebody who wants it a little more than u do. IMO that happened last night, and at auburn.

Saban's desired criteria for playing corner...

"Coaches calculate the grades by scoring each recruit based on three sets of criteria: character/attitude/intelligence, position-specific critical factors and a height/weight/speed chart. On Saban's grading scale the critical factors for a cornerback are:

• Can he judge the ball?
• Can he play man-to-man?
• Can he tackle?

The ideal height for a cornerback is between 6 feet and 6'2". The ideal weight is heavier than 180 pounds. The ideal speed is less than 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash. "

How many cornerbacks on Bama's depth chart meet that criteria? Not Belue, Jackson, Sylve, Smith, or Jones.

The deal is that Bama has lost 3 DB's in the 1st round of the draft the past 2 years. You just dont replace 1st rounders like that....plus the defense has missed Sunseri more than I thought they would. We had 2 true freshman for goodness sake out there vs a hot QB. Everyone cannot be a Hargreaves.

Im positive the secondary will be better next yr. 2 experienced safeties in Sunseri and Collins back, plus all spring ball for the young CB's(Jackson,Smith,Sylve,Jones) to get coached up.

A lot of the D-back problems can be put on a slow D-line that gets very little penetration. But still, the entire D-backfield under-performed this year, with glaring weaknesses at both corners. Is it technique? Maybe it is. Dre, Dee, Jackson all had huge learning curves going into the NFL, but in new systems, their talent is beginning to emerge as they learn.
