There will still be an AP poll, and a coaches poll.

There is not going to be a lot of transparency in how teams are selected. By not taking the top 4 teams from an existing poll, there will be more controversy than the BCS ever had.

I've been thinking about this and I think not only are you right but it is likely the playoff group wants this controversy and won't even be too upset if there were a split championship as a result.

After all, controversy generates interest and a split championship would give legs to the idea that the playoff field should be expanded to say 6 or 8 teams. Further expansion of the playoff will be the holy grail of increased future revenues.
