They were supposed to be really good this year. Even before Bielema left he was saying this would be the best team he had ever had at Wisconsin. They definitely had a disappointing year from what they were expecting.

I think "terrible" is a pretty strong word for what they were last year. All their losses were really close games and three were OT. It's not like they were getting blown out.

Returning starters is meaningless? You're basically saying recruiting/talent doesn't matter.

They returned only 8 starters from the 2011 team and pretty much had an entire new staff.

and no, they weren't terrible. Their biggest margin of defeat was 7 points and they might have been benefit of NCAA sanctions, but they didn't have the Big 10 title handed to them, they won the Championship game.
