And that's the bottom line. I seriously doubt that Sumlin signs that contract when he did had he won the last 2. Not saying that he wouldn't stay at aTm...just no pressure on him to move that fast. If USC had started moving in another direction, Sumlin loses leverage.

aTm overpaid by 1 to 1.5m but Sumlin was in a perfect position to leverage the USC offer. Can't fault him for that. My problem is that Miles & Malzan will also want +5m.

You don't have $5 after cleaning out the Tigermart beer tub last night.

I thinks this puts to rest all this stupid speculation that the Aggies will allow USCw or anyone else to outbid us for OUR mother frickin Coach.

Are we still assuming USC offered Sumlin anything? Because Im shocked that some random message board A&M fans know about this, but the rest of the nation has no idea about this super secret USC and Sumlin meeting that only A&M fans seem to know about.

I think USC offering Sumlin $6 million is complete and utter bullshite and will be proven to be so.

Why exactly?

Because there have been no reports of this, and I find it funny people here know, but NO ONE on the USC side of things knows anything about this? How would you know anyways? Seems like another aggy story to give themselves another moral victory when the real victories continue to pass them by.

I know A&M has a lot of money. Forget the exact dollar amount; that's not the point. He will be paid what the top coaches in college football are being paid. Right now, he has not achieved what the top coaches in college football have achieved (name whatever criteria you would like for this). I don't think any Aggie, or the university itself for that matter, would say they are satisfied with what Sumlin has produced to this point. They are paying him with the expectation of improved results.

Actually I completely agree with this. A&M paid Sumlin because that is what it took to keep him and secure him. What he has done so far is great but he didn't get a $5 million deal to win 8-10 games and go to the Gator/Cotton. A&M paid him that money to win the SEC and a Natty. If they didn't think he could do that they wouldn't have written the big check.

What situation? USC never offered Sumlin any job. The best rumor out there is that they were interested in interviewing him but they weren't ready to say he was their only choice. Sounds like the $ was never even talked about considering they hadn't even chosen a coach to settle on.

A&M never interviewed Fran either. At that level it is all at the agent level for plausible deniability. Maybe you think Texas isn't really interested in Saban because he hasn't been formally interviewed or offered the job either?

Sorry I tend to believe in actual reports instead of just hearsay and rumors. FWIW I talked to the USC side and they claim to have never even settled on offering Sumlin anything….

quote:

Yes there was interest from USC, but the donors said no early this past week. No confidence in his defense TIFWIW. Yes he was interested.

But as I said, the Aggies believe anything that makes them feel better about themselves..aka "moral victories". This is obvious based on the fact that USC has no idea about this offer, yet A&M fans make it seem like common knowledge.

The USC delegation was scheduled to fly to a pre-determined neutral location to interview Sumlin on December 1 (today), but would also be meeting with two other candidates on the same day. We have been told repeatedly by USC sources and have had it confirmed over and over again throughout the coaching search Sumlin was NOT the favorite for the job because no favorite has emerged. Haden has insisted on interviewing all the candidates before deciding on a leader or a top target. Any reports to the contrary are completely false.

quote:

For the two months leading up to this past week, Sumlin’s representatives were in near constant contact with USC, continually letting Haden’s people know that he wanted the job. He felt quarterback Johnny Manziel was set to jump to the NFL and he was not looking forward to a rebuild next season. He wanted a new challenge and thought the path to a national championship would be easier at USC.

As the season progressed and the people at USC started digging into Sumlin’s background, his coaching philosophy, etc., some began to sour on him as a top option. That’s not to say he wasn’t still a target, but he had fallen down a few notches in some eyes. His team’s 8-4 record and scoring defense (84th in the nation at 30.9 points per game) also worked against him. Still, they were intrigued because he was pushing so hard for the job.

Then in the middle of last week Sumlin’s representatives contacted USC, canceled their December 1 meeting and asked that his name be taken off the list of candidates. He had decided to remain at Texas A&M and was set to sign an extension. Most people at USC expected that would be the eventual outcome all along, especially as the season went on and some of the higher-ups began to sour on him.

That can't possibly be true. I saw on the rant that he was offered $6mm by USC and he was almost out the door. I saw it here. No way that other stuff could be true.

Also Dan Patrick on his morning radio show said he heard USC wasn't going to offer.
