Brees shoulda won a national title, dammit.
Actually, I don't think Dayne beat out Tomlinson, but I know he beat out Brees one year. In any event, that's why I did clarify about the absence of a clear frontrunner. That's probably why Sullivan, who somebody mentioned above, won it. He was a mediocre quarterback by Heisman standards, but the next in line was a running back from the Ivy League.

I didn't remember Tomlinson in 1999, but the site I looked up indicated he had the most yards per game and much higher yards per carry. I do remember Alexander being clearly the better running back of the two, but having some injuries that caused him to miss games early and then underperform once or twice.
