Saban has actually explained this several times on his call in shows. We typically play a very safe "vanilla" defense to start off games. It's apparently very predictable. This being the case, it is easy for a good coach that have some good offensive weapons to take advantage of this fact early in the game. The different formations and plays run out of those different formations are different than anything that team has done all year, so our guys don't really know how to react to something that looks new to them. After a few series though, the other team always has to go back to what they do best and that's when our guys can stop them. This is exactly the reason I posted what I did above your post.
