I'm going to try to get through to you knuckleheads one more time:
Any other QB in the nation is sacked at midfield and A&M has to punt the ball. Only Johnny could get away from that sack. After he got away from it, he had two choices. He could throw the ball away, or throw the ball up. That's it. Those were his only reasonable options. If he threw the ball away, we'd have to either punt or trying to convert a 4th and 8 from just outside FG range. If he throws it up, one of three things will almost certainly happen. Most likely, it's incomplete. It's also possible that it'll get picked, in which case Bama will have it about the 20 (no real chance for a return on a throw like that). Finally, one of the two 6'5 WRs he had in the area very well might go up and get it, in which case A&M keeps the drive going.
Yes, it was lucky. And, yes, it was brilliant.
