If you don't hate rats and filth, and aren't trying to use the subway at like 4-6am out of Manhattan(that whole city never sleeps thing is bullshite), it isn't terrible. It's definitely one of the worst of the major cities though. DC's is far better.

Just from a simple Google search I see a Whole Foods in Tribeca, a Trader Joes and Fairway Market on the Upper West Side, a Whole Foods in Bowery, a Fairway Market on the Upper East Side, a Whole Foods in Chelsea, and a Whole Foods in Union Square. That took ten seconds.

I could tell you several Asian cities that are worse. Hell, LA makes NYC's public transit look like a masterwork. I don't see how there could be a rational argument on LA having a better public transit than NYC.
