I can honestly say, especially in dealing with kids, sometimes you need a swift kick in the nuts to be able to finally buy in.
I can honestly say in 2010, it was the worst disappointment I've had as an Alabama fan. I mean, have you seen that fricking roster?! I mean, seriously, go look at it. How in the hell do you lose three games like that?
However, it was a season that Saban could always point to in real life, and say, "Look at the names on the those teams. Those guys lost 3 games. It's what happens when you don't buy in, you don't give it your all."
Since that season, Alabama hasn't really had a 'bad loss.' LSU in 2011 was a great game; we just didn't make the plays at the end. 2012 A&M was a result of running into an elite player after a game which quite simply, took it out of us. Can't really complain about those.
If you can build off those experiences, I'm fine with them every so often. ULM for Alabama, UAB for LSU were teaching moments that had enough weight to make an impression for Saban going forward.
After the MSU/ULM/Auburn disaster in 2007, we went 12-0 in the regular season. After the 2008 Sugar Bowl disaster, we won the national championship. After the 2010 season (which might only rank behind UGA's 2008 team as the SEC's biggest underachievement, ever), we turned around to win 2 titles.
