I'm pretty sure the 1972, 1989, 2005 and even 2010 Auburn teams disagree with that.

AU certainly can be viewed as having impact in three of those year (72, 89, 2005) but they were one of multiple losses, not the only loss.
2010, we were pretty much out of a national title hunt by the Iron Bowl. Even a win there would not have given us a shot at the SEC title.
