Im straddling the fence on this issue.

Mullen is currently 4-3 (1-2) on the season yet a growing number of our fans are furious with him and feel that he should be fired at the end of the year.

This is the guy who has taken us to 3 straight bowl games and has a current career record of 33-25 which is the best percentage wise in the HISTORY of our program.

Recruiting seems to be a big issue, but Im not sure how many coaches could do a lot better having to recruit to Starkville.

Facilities and Stadium upgrades are there (which Mullen asked for after his 9-4 season)

So I'm to my question, Is Dan Mullen getting unfairly criticized? Im trying to be an optimist, we were one play away from beating Auburn and being 5-2.

Our 3 losses are to 3 top 15 teams in Oklahoma State, Auburn, and LSU.

I think Dan has one of the toughest if not THE toughest job in the SEC havin to play Bama, A&M, Auburn, LSU, and Ole Miss every year.

Dan is a good coach, State would be silly to run him off.

He's not going to get you 8 regular season wins every year, but I think he can consistently take you to bowl games, while sneaking in a 9-10 win season every 3 or 4 years.

Winning silences the critics every time.

Like the SECr tried to tell you two years ago but you wouldn't listen. Your fan base will get the taste of a few bowl games and want more and better bowls. That's whats happening now.

Back then you tried to tell us that your fan base would be happy winning 6-8 games a year and getting to a bowl. Obviously that is not the case.

In all seriousness, it is a horribly unattractive job. Without question the toughest place to win in the best division in college football. It's not a program that lends itself to a flashy record that could get a coach a promotion nor is it a destination job.

You have been pretty much absent from the board offering support for your team. I can't believe a win over Kentucky gave you some courage to speak out on behalf of Mullen.

Once you reach this point, it's only a matter of time.

serious response:

MONEY is the gasoline that runs a winning engine.

Until MSU gets 75,000 seat stadium, it will be hard to compete for the WEST year in and year out.

Bama, LSU and AU all have more than 87451 seat stadia. I think aTm will be a FORCE in the future.

aTm has more money given to their school than any SEC school. AS they CONTINUE TO improve their facilities, aTm will compete for West every year.

GEOGRAPHY: MSU and Ole Miss are in a tough spot. 2 state schools in a small state who are not as close to Atlanta or Florida as Auburn is.

I can be angry without having a desire to fire him. You have to do the best with what you have. Yes, it is difficult to recruit to Starkville. We coach dumb with the players that we have. Uninspired, sleep walking teams piss me off. That's on the coaches.

Agree with the fact he is getting unfair criticism. He is a good coach and is doing well at MSU. He is winning the ones he should and losing to much more talented teams. It would not be wise for MSU to piss him off. He jumps ship to a program where he does not have to constantly compete against more talented teams (SEC west is obviously the toughest place to play in the country right now) he would probably win big.

I mean, how much better can state get? Should probably hold on to the Muff and hope he does better in the next 10 years.

I read that thread on the Recruiting board last night. All I can say is damn...

I hate to see you guys suffer like you're doing.

I always felt Mullen was doing good with what he had to offer. However, I think he fell well short this year in the Auburn game this year. That along with the self-imposed recruiting stuff may be what has everyone done.

Next year certainly looks good - I'd hate to see that opportunity blown because it's suddenly a rebuilding year for a first year coach.

Mullen does a fine job in my opinion. Short of cheating, I just don't see MSU finishing better than 4th or 5th in the SECW. This isn't Aggie speaking, this is somebody who has lived here for 30+ years and followed MSU and OM closely.

MSU needs to do better at recruiting. Ole Miss is obviously cheating, evidence be damned, and MSU needs to at least keep up with OM. Which leads to: When was the only year MSU played in the SECCG? '98, with "You can't prove it" Jackie Sherrill.

I don't see MSU getting there without cheating, honestly. Small state, nobody wants to go to Starkville, etc. But any MSU fans calling for Mullens to be fired are delusional. He's the best you guys have had at least since Sherrill, and that had its own problems.

Unnecessary? maybe. Unreasonable? No.
