Because the pattern of the carpet that he is sitting on is the same as the Apollo launch pad. He stands up from the center of it, and walks down the hall to room 237 (which is a different room number from the book). When the movie was made it was thought that the distance from the earth to the moon was 237 million miles.

That's one of the first things anyone reads about concerning the double meanings of this movie, so obviously you haven't read much on this topic, which you claim.
