I agree with this 100%. I think you can look back across any BSC bowl game and see that most of the matchups weren't as desirable as people would have wanted which is a huge draw back of the BCS system.

Add in the fact that the title games are played at one of the four BCS game locations adds to another draw back by the system. Starting in 98' they should have just held all title games in one spot to mellow the exhibition feeling.

In some ways the BCS deflated the image of the historical major bowls. When Alabama was in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, I was both excited and disappointed. Excited to be back in a bowl that held importance to Alabama. Disappointed we got there after losing in the SEC title game.
