Sugar Bowl importance

Help me understand this.
Depending on which conference you're in, certain teams aim for the highest standard of their conference bowl game.
Big XII -Fiesta
B1G -Rose
SEC - Sugar
Pac 12 -Rose
ACC - Orange
With the success the SEC has had, I think most teams as of now (Bama, LSU, UGA, UF) are elite enough to set their standards on the title game then hope for the best in the Sugar Bowl. This certainly is the mindset of perennial title contenders in all conferences to get to the title game and if all else fails get to the best bowl game possible.
If you're a fan of a team like USC, Auburn, Miss St and so forth, how much of an importance do you place on the Sugar Bowl? For teams that are in the upper echelon of the SEC, do you view it as consolation prize if you don't get to the title game or win the SEC? For LSU fans, does this have a special meaning to you since it's played in NOLA? Just curious....
Sidenote: Aggie and Tiger fans opinion don't really count here since they are Big 12 transplants but feel free to comment on the Fiesta bowl back in your Big 12 days.

I would say the most important thing to any SEC team is win the SEC and you'll be fine, save bama(2011).

Bowls in general seem less important now than they did pre-BCS, even the "BCS" bowls like the Sugar Bowl. They all have a bit of an exhibition feel now that there is a "championship" game. In a way they have always had somewhat of an exhibition feel to me, but it's even more so now. Obviously, would rather go to the Sugar Bowl than any non-BCSCG bowl, but it definitely used to seem bigger.
The fact that it is rarely the SEC champion in the Sugar Bowl now contributes to this as well. Also the Sugar seems to get some less than desirable matchups lately too.

I think you are thinking about in context of the Big 10 where the pinnacle is the Rose Bowl. Thats what everyone shoots for up there.
Since the SEC championship game as all but become a BCS play in game the hope for LSU, GA, AL etc is to win that game and play in the BCS.
To a small extent the Sugar Bowl is for the team that places 2nd in the SEC - thus a bit of a let down.

Alabama had a massive amount of history in the Sugar Bowl. We've played there more than anyone, including LSU.

Given our recent success I think many Bama fans view a Sugar Bowl appearance as a letdown. When we lost GotC Part I the guy next to me screamed "frick! I don't want to play fricking Boise in the Sugar Bowl!"

With Florida, I was a little disappointed with SB in 09 considering we were undefeated until SECCG. I actually was glad UF got to go to the Sugar bowl last year (considering how shitty 2010-11 were), but the final score sucked, obviously.

I would say beating Tulane their usually equals a National Title for us.

The Sugar Bowl while historically relevant is no longer a desired location.
No fan at the beginning of the year longs to make the Sugar Bowl.
Being in the Sugar Bowl means you were the best team in the SEC that didn't make the championship game (or playoff).
While it's still a great bowl, compared to all the others, it's no longer the ultimate goal.

The bowls are all in decline, due to the "win or bust" mentality. Case in point- look at Florida's indifference to last year's Sugar; even moreso, look at LSU's fans' open hostility to the Peach.
Mindset- if you aren't playing for #1, it isn't worthwhile. Result- there are well over 100 major programs; there is no way to even come close to a truly fair matchup in a playoff.
Clemson currently is in consideration for a shot at the BCS, and would have been in a 4 game playoff had that started this season, and they run the table. Louisville likely is left out in that same scenario; they're behind the SEC (Bama), Pac 12 (Oregon), ACC (Clemson), B1G (Ohio St). Yet, Louisville smoked Florida in the Sugar last year, and Clemson managed a miracle 1 pt win over LSU in the Peach (which is why they started so high in the rankings). And that doesn't even address Baylor and the mega-offense they have, and likely also will be left on the outside looking in. Message- unless you're predetermined, don't bother.
Why pay big money to go to a bowl to see a team that has been told to not bother? Why continue to invest millions to host irrelevant bowls people won't attend?

Here's the deal with the SEC.
- 1st priority is to win SEC Championship.
- Hopefully if you lose the SEC Championship game, you get to go to the Sugar as a consolation prize. Still kind of a letdown.
- If you win and don't make it to the BCS Championship game (hasn't happened in a while), the Sugar Bowl is still just meh because you already did what you came to do.
- If you get to the Sugar Bowl without going to the SEC Championship game (Florida/Arky), then it is still just meh, because the season was pretty much a bust anyway.
Basically, the Sugar Bowl is a letdown for any of the teams with National Championship Hopes (Bama, LSU, GA, FL). For the rest, it is pretty cool because its probably the best they could have expected anyway.
