Option O makes the QB dual threat. Forces D to play more contain than attacking as they would want to normally do. Typically a D plays pass with rush or blitz front, or they strength is cover D. The dual threat makes playing man very difficult.

What makes the player a dual threat are quick feet, great hips for bring elusive and the ability to keep eyes downfield while evading defenders. A quick release is also requisite.
