It wasn't that he missed the game but that he waited until the last second to pull himself out. If he had said Thursday he might not play then I think there wouldn't be so much backlash against him.
Its also more glaring since Clowney pulling himself out at the last second is juxtaposed with Shaw playing through yet another injury.
And I'd like to know what the thinking was behind Clowney not getting his bone spurs fixed over the offseason
I guarantee you the coaching staff does not appreciate a key player pulling out of the equation at the last minute. Like, on game day right before kick-off. If the player has some unforeseen injury that was a game-time decision all game week, or gets injured during warmups (it has happened elsewhere), then you deal with it and move forward.
But the staff doesn't like having unexpected issues like this regarding personnel laid on them at the last minute. Coach Ward and his staff game-planned and prepared all week long for Clowney to be a starter vs UK, and then at the last minute had to shuffle things.
Clowney only missed practice on Thursday: the primary practices in game weeks come Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday they rachet it down a bit only suiting up in shells (helmet & shoulder pads) and shorts, and only do some light drills.
If the coaches knew Clowney would be a game-time decision or possibly not even play, they would've had someone else share in first-team reps in Clowney's place Mon. through Wed., but I'm guessing they didn't...

Todd McShay stated on College a Football Daily that nothing has changed in terms of Clowney's chances of going #1 in the draft unless a team NEEDS a QB. McShay says Clowney's tapes from the first four games look great, and he has never seen a player schemed around like JC has been, ever. McShay implied that NFL guys understand the dynamics at work here, and JC is still the most dominant athlete in CFB today.

Starting a thread with this and a link to the original article on tRant would probably be gold.
But if you decide to do that, duck for cover immediately

I would but I think it will be best to let this Clowney scandal die down but here's the original link to the article.

No question, he'll only not be the #1 Overall Pick if it's a team that needs a QB AKA Bridgewater. Also completely agree with scheming, I've gone back and looked at some of the games from time to time, usually always double teamed or has a 2nd guy there to chip before they go out for a pattern or they'll just usually run away from him. All the teams that have played us this season have done a great job utilizing Clowney. The other 10 on the field have to take advantage of their opportunities when they present themselves. But I'm glad the experts at least get it, ranters to busy have their blinders on and are too busy trolling.

The other 10 need to do their jobs... and if so, JC's numbers (if he plays) will get better. Luckily, Quarles and JT Surratt have decided to step up here as of late.

It might be just me but I think we will see a new defense this weekend. Tj Holloman is looking like the best linebacker we have and the dline looked better also. All we need is for someone else in the secondary to step up. Playing arky we have to stop the run.

I agree, but there's a real problem in our LB corps and that is size. Not something you can fix during the season. The D will have to take their lumps this year and come back bigger and stronger next year.
It has been said already, but it really is worth reiterating that we are the YOUNGEST team in college football. That is very significant. People who were expecting our D to be better than last year were fooling themselves.
In any case, I am glad it's still football season and I am glad I can watch occasionally.

Some more news released about Clowney today from Tony Morrell on TheBigSpur for anyone that hasn't heard:
Also a nice article about Clowney from Detroits Leading Draft Scout found here thought it was a good read.

I spoke with a very good source close to the Jadeveon Clowney situation. Since the game on Saturday, Clowney has had scans performed that showed he has a pulled muscle around his tenth rib - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenth_rib
The location of the injury is painful and has also made it difficult for him to breath correctly, especially when exercising. The hope is he will improve as the week goes on, return to practice and be able to play against Arkansas on Saturday. However, there is no guarantee it will unfold like that.
He has not “quit on his teammates” and is not protecting himself for the next level any more so than any other top prospect. His effort level this season has been as good or better than last season. While he hasn’t made the eye popping plays he did at times in 2012, the effect he’s had on games and opposing offenses has still been substantial.

Was over there for many years before I saw the light. I struggle to read the posts over there sometimes, not because of the opinions, but because of the fundamental grammatical errors.
(The opinions have been worsening though.)

That site is unbearable now. I think when gogamecocks went to the membership only format all the idiots that posted over there migrated to cockytalk and started spewing shite everywhere. Now every thread turns into a giant bickering match.
Very glad I converted.
