What concerns me is that we haven't seen either of the true freshman. If we're to trust Butch as a coach, we have to assume he's playing our most talented players. If Dobbs and Ferguson haven't shown enough in practice to pass Peterman on the depth chart, they're probably not very good.

Not that I disagree with you but he probably felt more comfortable using Petermen in that environment than he did a couple of ultra-green freshmen (Petermen has at least seen the field) also I'm sure he would prefer not to burn either of the freshman's redshirt if possible so you go with Petermen.
Obviously now that Petermen is injured one of their redshirts will likely have to be burned
