It's kind of like allowing a team vote to determine the fate of a fellow player. You can always deflect the ridicule from the outside by saying "the team decided they wanted him to stay," but everyone knows it was only put to a team vote so Les would have an excuse for keeping a criminal on the team.

That's Les Miles coach speak to get everybody to buy into "the team is one" kind of mentality. If Miles would've felt that the incident was serious enough, he would've just kicked the kid off of the team. You think the team voted on the Honey Badger getting kicked off of the team? He failed enough drug tests and that was it. I'm sure the team didn't vote on Ryan Perrilloux getting kicked off the team a few years back when he was supposed to be the starting QB and the next great thing...

Once you fail 3-5 drug tests, you can't explain it away with a team vote. He only kicked off Honey Badger so he could keep his job. It wasn't a righteous choice.
