This should not be measured just by wins and losses. This should also be measured in how a programmed was damaged from the tenure of the coach.
1) Lane Kiffin, never seen SEC students riot over a coach leaving
2) Houston Nutt, Ole Miss, at least he got a few more million $'s
3) John L Smith, Arkansas*, It was all down hill after the intro
*Temporary hire, I think, everything went wrong including his personal finances

i disagree with OP. kiffin was a great hire, but no one foresaw what a scumbag he would turn out to be.
Derek Dooley is the worst hire in SEC history.

Changed my mind.
John L. Smith was the worst hire on the list.
Kiffin did the most damage during his tenure and departure.

I wouldn't include JLS... the circumstances forced the hire. If you include JLS, you gott include that moron who took over for Bobby Johnson in 2009... total trainwreck.

1. John L. Smith - Arkansas
2. Lane Kiffin - Tennessee
3. Derek Dooley - Tennessee
Tennessee is the big loser with two of the three worst

2010 is really the only thing keeping Chizik off this list. Really, you could say it was a bad hire that won the lottery.

Smith shouldn't be on the list because he was a temp coach. He was terrible, but Arkansas would have been overrated with Petrino, so it wasn't all his fault. Petrino would have won a few more games, though.
Shula deserves to be on there somewhere and I want to say Ron Zook, but he was hired in 2002.

Dooley has to be atop the list

There is zero chance that Derek Dooley isn't on the list. He's not only on the list, he's #1.
Derek Dooley was the worst head coach to ever roam a SEC sideline. He was the worst hire any major program has made since football became big business.
For some reason, UT thought that hiring a guy who didn't even have a winning record at the lower levels of football would equate to big winning in the SEC. They were wrong.
As a reward, Dooley made UT the absolute worst program in the SEC his final two years. Think about that again. Tennessee, for the last two years, has been the absolute worst program in the SEC. They have 2 conference victories in the last 2 years. No team has fewer. The only teams tied with them are Kentucky, who also had two victories and split games with UT, and Missouri, who only played in the SEC for one of those seasons.
Derek Dooley was just absolutely awful. He buried the UT program far enough that I think it'll take more than one coach cycle to bring it back.
