I think they kind of fit in culturally speaking. They are to USCe as Auburn is to Alabama. A beloved red headed step child.

In what universe is Clemson, South Carolina's red headed stepchild? Sure, they've had the upper hand the past few years. No denying that. But let's be real here... Clemson has won 18 conference championships and a national title. What has South Carolina ever won in 120+ years of football? One conference championship, ever. Clemson owns the all time head to head record, that includes the first 60 or so years that the game was played EVERY year in Columbia. Clemson even owns the head to head in their own stadium. Sure South Carolina has a 4 year streak going, for only the second time ever in series. Clemson has accomplished that feat 4 times, just in my lifetime. Let's not forget South Carolina almost made it to the 21st century without ever winning a bowl game, a noble accomplishment indeed. Clemson has won more bowl games then they've even been to. Don't let those idiots down in Columbia fool you.

Probably because their fan base is about 1/5 the size and only one corner of the state.
