I could honestly not care less about this particular name change...but the ongoing push for political correctness is beyond annoying. It's masking truths. People can't stand to hear something that might hurt their feelings, so they demand that you not say it.
Yes, the Black Bear annoys me. Not because I had some man-crush on Col. Reb, but because someone decided a cartoon character wasn't PC. I could make an argument against many mascots...The Raiders/Vikings - murdered hundreds of thousands of my ancestors and their countrymen. "Razorbacks" and "Fighting Tigers" can trace their nicknames to Confederate origins and on and on...Silly isn't it?
The confederate battle flag is altogether different. It wasn't used until the 40's when it was adopted by the Dixiecrats - throughout the South - to signify opposition to integration. It needed to go and the school disassociated with it in 1983. I'm glad it's gone.

I don't care about the name change either. The thing that bothers me though is that the student government drafted this bill right before time for new elections, and their justification for getting rid of the title was that it was "unconstitutional." What the frick is that supposed to mean?
If you want to change it, fine, have at it. I just have a problem with them being pussies and dancing around the issue. Just say you changed it because you thought it was racist.

I don't think arkiesauce's mascot has anything to do with the glorious CSA.

I think Fayetteville was in the hippie liberal part of Arkansas that supported the freedom hating, blue belly, big government liberals that sided with the North. Apparently plantation agriculture wasn't very useful in the Ozarks.
