unfortunately it is more of an urban city... USC was founded as a leadership college for the legislature, so the original campus is adjacent to the state Capital. ...unlike LSU which didn't move to BR until 1926, when the state had a better idea of the facilities needed for a university.

Be that as it may, I've never felt like USC was "in the city." Of course Columbia isn't very big, but I've always thought of the main area that comprises USC as being its own college town entity. Part of the reason I chose USC over other SEC schools was because of the campus-within-a-town-within-a-city feel.
