I'm a canoe endurance racer. I compete in sanctioned ultra marathon river races. Essentially, I'm a canoeing expert and enthusiast.
I agree that tubing might seem boring, but it's not. In fact, with a group of people who are looking to party on the river (and I assume that's the goal on the Guadalupe), tubing is the only way to do it. You'll look like a douchebag in a canoe on the Guadalupe because it is a tubing river.
However, purchase a tube instead of renting one. You'll spend less and you'll own the tube for future float trips. Also, purchase a small children's tube (one with a bottom) for your cooler and then tie it to your tube. You must not forget a separate tube for your cooler.
Everyone will tie up and it'll be a huge floating party.
You'll have blast! And you'll want to do it again.
PS...Do NOT canoe on the Guadalupe. It's not a canoeing river. Just trust me.
Watch out for rattle snakes.
