I would suggest doing the Comal if you want to hang out and drink some beers. It's right in New Braunfels and only takes a couple hours, it can be pretty crowded though. There's lots of outfitters, I've used Texas Tubes before.
I've never done the canoeing thing in Texas rivers honestly, that's why I asked. Gruene is badass if you've never been. Eat at the Grist Mill and have a couple Shiners at Gruene Hall.

Thanks...but there is a new can law on the Comal from what I understand. No cans on the water inside city limits. I think the bridge just below Gruene is the cut off point.
