Has anyone here floated the Guadalupe before? Is there a certain outfitter to use or part of the river that's better than others?

Also, how is just floating on an inner-tube? Seems like it could get boring compared to canoeing of rafting.

Are you trying to do a leisurely party type float or are you trying to outdoorsy type floating? This is key to a couple questions you asked

I always go to the Lion's Club tubing in San Marcos... No can ban, relatively short float, you can do it as many times as you want, and there are some nice rapids at the end that are fun to go down repeatedly.

I am pretty sure we used River Bank Outfitters when I was stationed in San Antonio. Worst damn sunburn of my life on the first trip I took. Tubing was definitely the way to go. They were friendly and there were no alcohol restrictions outside of no glass containers. That has been about 5-6 years ago. So I can't speak to the river levels or any new rules.

We've just had some pretty good rain here so hopefully the river level is flowing. We go Concan every year and there is pretty much zero flow, so instead, we just sit and drink beer

Enjoy your trip and be sure to go eat at the Grismill. You'll love it.

If you are hell bent on bringing cans, then obviously the Comal is out of the question. The Guadalupe is so low right now (62 CFS being released out of the lake, that's basically its as shut as they can get it to be) that you are going to be walking your drunk arse for most of it.

In this case, what I'd do is do the horseshoe off of 306. The river goes under 306, goes a mile or so out and then comes back under. So you put in at the top, float the the bottom, get out and you can walk back to the top again and do the float until you can't stand anymore. While out there, eat at Granny D's, right by the Canyon Lake Dam, you're welcome [pancakes are about 10-12" diameter, no shittin, and the 1# BLT is legit].

If you want to be smart about it, you can do the Comal. The Faust Hotel does their own beer and offers stainless steel growlers. Also, there is no law against bringing your own keg or pony keg on the Comal, we just had to outlaw cans as the drunks forgot how to take them with them. I used to float with Texas Tubes (my own floating is done before the season now so I just bring my own) and Landa Falls starts at the Wurstfest Grounds and offers the longest Comal float.

The thing about bringing your own tube to the Comal is that most of the parking around the river is permit only during the season. You can park off of Comal Street, I think east of Garden only 1 side is permit, and then walk to San Antonio Street, take that across the river to Prince Solms park and hop in. Then when you get out at the last public exit for your last time, your car isn't but 1/4 mile away. Or you can hope out at the Garden Street exit on your last trip and its only couple hundred yards away.

And on the Guadalupe, no real way to bring your own car unless you do the horseshoe. Everywhere else you'd have to have somebody drop you off at one of the crossings and pick you up at another.. logistics nightmare.

For eats in Gruene, I prefer Mozie's over Gristmill (too many horrible experiences at Gristmill). Same owner, better atmosphere and better food.

If you are into BBQ, one of the Texas Top 50 from Texas Monthly is just up the road right south of San Marcos. Take Hunter Road/1102 up about 10 miles and it will be on your right. Damn good BBQ, love the cheddar jalapeno sausage. Sides suck, don't bother.
