He is not only providing "pocket money" again this year to a sophomore player, but funding the disadvantaged parents trips to away games.

I'm not sure what team you are referring to, but I don't have a problem with that regardless.
As long as the player's compensation is reasonable for a college student summer job. The parents travel to away games is an awesome gesture, especially if they are from the same hometown, or otherwise have some kind of high school or family connection.
