It was a joke. IIRC, someone asked Bryant, back in the day before UAB had football, if UAB had a team, would Alabama play them if they did? Bryant supposedly responded with, "We don't play night schools."

I gathered that it was a joke and appreciate the backstory, but I don't actually know what night school is. My impression is that night school is basically like community college at night. Is that about right?
