This was happening at UofA even in the dinosaur age when I was in college. It happened to a few of my friends & family members, as well.

Happened to the Co-Valedictorians, and Salutatorian in my graduating class.

One joined the Air Force, one caught up at North-Ark then transferred back to finish, the other is selling shingles or some shite (he had the highest GPA while taking all the AP classes).

It almost happened to the valedictorian of my class, who still holds the record for the highest GPA (all AP courses) at my high school. He started out at UofA, then transferred to Auburn, then Ole Miss, then finally graduated from Alabama. He started out in engineering of some kind, I think chemical, but is a chiropractor, now, so I guess he ended up ok, but it was kind of rocky for a while.
We used to tell him to just continue with his education, be a professional student, & try to attend every SEC school for at least a semester.
