Same reason that anything having to do with a game is reported more than anytime a soldier is killed in Afghanistan.
In the rape case, it's pretty clear what happened. It's pretty clear it's a crime. There's no national debate to be had. The criminals get their day in court, justice will prevail.
While smaller potatoes, the JFF situation set the stage for a great national debate ranging from the degree of self-control a 20 year old should possess to rights over a college student-athlete's likeness and ability to earn money to questioning the very nature of the NCAA itself.
