As an old timer...I recall with fondness the UF vs AU games when it was as importsant as the UGA game and we played both back to back for many years. I would argue that it cost us a few SEC titles back in the day.

I remember Jimmy Sidle of AU and the 19-0 loss we suffered in 1963 and the next year we beat them 14-0 as I recall and a 88 yd interception return by db/rb Dick Kirk was the big play (Kirk had beat Bama in Tuscaloosa the year before with a 40 yd run at rb) Spurrier was qb in 1964 but it was a defensive battle...in 1965 we traveled to the damnedest village and lost by a misleading score of 28-17....a back up qb came off the bench for AU and threw a 60 yd+ pass to put AU up 21-17 late in the fourth qt and Spurrier fumbled a razzle dazzle play allowing AU to add on another TD.
The following year Spurrier was a sr and of course led the Gators to a 30-28 win in a high scoring affair helping cememt his bid for a Heisman over Purdues Bob Griese....yes...the father of Brian.
The UF vs AU featured home advantage for boith teams with the visitors almost always doomed. Even with supeerior teams we would find ways to lose...evidence by the 2001 team ranked # 1 at the time and coached by Spurrier...it was played in extremely high windy conditions and the AU library caught fire as I recalled...prompting Spurrier to quip that only three coloring books were lost and one hadnt been colored in yet.

Neat stories. Thanks for posting.

Regarding Spurrier: Unless things change I don't think he will ever get another crack at Auburn. We certainly closed the gap on his record against us the last few meetings.

I was at that game. Also related to Jimmy Sidle on my dad's side of the family, through marriage.
