And because his father played for Bear Bryant he is eligible for the Bryant Scholarship which follows these rules regarding counting against the 85 limit:

If the player was a recruited walk-on, a student-athlete who was recruited by Alabama's coaches and who receives the Bryant Scholarship, that player does not count against Alabama's scholarship numbers until he sees playing time.

What the frick is a bear Bryant scholarship? I really would love to see what the NCAA has to say about that rule.
