I think that's just a rumor. He knew Dye wouldn't leave Auburn after just 2 years, especially for Alabama. I've heard he handed the BOT 3 names: Howard Schnellenberger, Gene Stallings, and Ray Perkins. Of course they would pick the only one to not be successful.

No, it was before Dye took the AU job.

Bryant told Dye, he wanted Dye to "follow in his footsteps" when he retired as Bama's coach.

Dye told Bryant he thought there were too many former players currently in coaching bama would look at as well and if AU offered the position he was going to take it.

Bryant said, "well, you are not going to beat me if you take the AU job".

Dye's response was "Maybe not, but I will whip whoever takes your place."
