Anyone ever heard this rumor before?

Ken Mattingly, who is an AU grad, apparently placed one on the Appolo 16 landing.

As a part of the Apollo 16 mission, Auburn Alum and Astronaut Ken Mattingly flew 10 specially designed Auburn flags to the moon. One of the flags was left on the moon to represent Auburn University. The flag was designed by former Associate Professor of Art at Auburn, Tazewell Morton.

What I heard was that they forgot to put toilet tissue on the lander. They were in a bind.

I couldn't resist that.

That's the rumor. What we do know is that 10 Auburn flags went up on the Apollo 16. What we don't know is if any were left up there. Mattingly has always been super coy about it. Here's a NYTimes about it.

You obviously don't know the story behind this.

He offered this information tongue-in-cheek knowing it couldn't be disproven. I'll look for the link that tells his side. It's a good troll for sure.

Mattingly and Hank Hartsfield once comprised an all-Auburn space crew, triggering taunts from its rival, Alabama.

“They called it the first space shuttle,” Voss said, “with a gun rack in the back.”

Yes, this is a true story. The problem is the light side of the moon is always in light so after about a week or so the flag and any other had turned to powder but it is true he planted a flag there.

Ken Mattingly was the CMP of Apollo 16. He stayed in the command module, orbiting the moon, while John Young (CDR) and Charlie Duke (LMP) walked around on the lunar surface.
