BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham sports-talk radio station ESPN 97.3 The Zone is going off the air less than two years after the station launched in August 2011, clearing the way for Paul Finebaum's new ESPN radio show to return to WJOX 94.5 FM, AL.com learned today.

The Zone's last day on the air will be Friday, according to multiple Birmingham radio sources. The station is expected to announce the news it to its staff Wednesday morning.

Finebaum's new ESPN show will originate out of Charlotte and will be carried on stations around the Southeast beginning around the first week of August. In Birmingham, it is expected to air weekdays in its regular 2 to 6 p.m. time slot

Does this move the roundtable back to it's original spot and do the Texas boys get waivers?

So there's basically no difference other than Paul works for ESPN now and makes a lot more money?

Figures

The Zone was atrocious radio. Seriously, seriously, horrible in every possible way. And, Scarbinsky needs to just move to a different market, this has to be his hint that he lost it locally in Alabama.

The midday mass is the worst shite I've ever heard on sports radio. Every time I think they may have a good segment, they go on a tangent about some shite completely unrelated. The sports czars are a close second.

I'm confused as to why they even brought up 97.3. I know there was speculation he was going there so maybe that's why they mentioned it. This seems like two different stories, but whatever. Also, Finebaum will be just going back to 94.5 the same station he was in a lawsuit with for months and months and Birmingham will be back to only having one sports channel to listen to? .

It's kind of funny. He snubbed one of the companies (Clearchannel? I can't remember) that owned the local affiliate who he had a contract with in order to get a bigger contract with ESPN who will....put him on the local affiliate owned by the company which he snubbed. I'm guessing they will have the exact same line up they had before Paul left, which is a good thing sans Jay and Al's show. I hate that show.

Jim dunaway is the best sports personality in Birmingham and might be one of the best in the SEC. Always liked is takes . CBS 42 -bham does an awesome job as well covering the sec.

so that means WNSP will likely carry the Finebaum show from 2-4pm like they used to down here in Mobile.

great.

OT: Did you go to Fbaums forum on Saturday at 16th Street Baptist Church? I didnt make but I was hoping there would be an article or something that recapped how it went

Back on topic, I want the old schedule back on Jox and would be okay if they replaced the Opening Drive with Scarbinsky or either put the Texas guys in that spot. I cant stand to listen to Barker, DelGreco, or Kurre

so will jox be getting their espn affiliation back? right now they are with fox i believe.

glad to see the end of the sports czars. worst sports show i've ever listened to. the fact they were the zone's highest rated show tells you all you need to know about that station.

bet the dallas guys are toast. RT back to middays.

sad to see the griff and scarbinsky show gone. pretty solid show especially when compared to its morning counterpart.

once again matt coulter is out of a job. i'm sure he will get his 8756th show somewhere else sooner rather than later.
