You're absolutely right. LaRussa tended to be able to avoid extended streaks or slumps. I certainly think LaRussa threw away games here and there but I think you have to in order to keep your team fresh late in the season. He always seemed to do it mid season. But he avoided, for the most part, extended streaks.

Wish Matheny had the balls to squeeze back in the 11th or was it the 12th.. with runners at corners and 1 out with Manness at the plate. Instead double play ended it. Tony woulda squeezed.
