Let's see how it plays out. It's a long season. Many of LaRussa's team would struggle in the middle of the season as well. The question will be how Matheny gets the team to finish.

I very well may be overreacting. Im very prone to that.

That being said...

Im not sure Larussa cost the team games. He was very good at diffusing issues during the season and slowing bad trends especially in how he handled the pitching staff. Matheny is actually doing things that are prolonging this bad trend.

Thats the difference I see when looking at these two. Of course comparing a hall of famer with a green manager isn't fair...but then again why is the second most storied franchise in baseball history on one of its best streaks in club history hiring a manger this green?

Dont know.

Seems like a bit of hubris from the front office when this hire was made to the tune of "We can hire who ever we want, were the Cardinals"

You're absolutely right. LaRussa tended to be able to avoid extended streaks or slumps. I certainly think LaRussa threw away games here and there but I think you have to in order to keep your team fresh late in the season. He always seemed to do it mid season. But he avoided, for the most part, extended streaks.
