I would rather him go cut his teeth with a club with less talent and less expectation.
Handing over this team to Matheny, with its current depth of talent, was a mistake. Mike very well could become a top tier manager. He is not that right now and is costing this team.
We are spoiled when it comes to managers, no question. That doesn't excuse this bad hire.

He did and his son's 14U team was damn good.

Let's see how it plays out. It's a long season. Many of LaRussa's team would struggle in the middle of the season as well. The question will be how Matheny gets the team to finish.
