Getting invited to play in a bowl game does not guarantee that a school will not lose money when making an appearance. In fact, bowl appearances sometimes cost more than what they generate -- even BCS games that feature the sport's biggest names.

And it turns out even one of the best-run athletic departments in the country playing in its conference's most sought-after bowl destination isn't immune. The Gainesville Sun reported that at an annual budget meeting Wednesday, Florida revealed it lost $840,000 when in played in January's Sugar Bowl. The culprit: The Gators athletic department was unable to sell its allotment of 17,500 tickets. There was a sizable amount of unsold tickets.

The financial blow is insult to injury after former Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and his Louisville Cardinals dominated the Gators, 33-23.

I heard this on a shitty, hack job low rent, sports radio show on Thursday, so I'm going to assume it's been posted here.

But thats unreal how much they lost

that's pathetic. fairweather fan base in the state of Florida will be UF's achille's heel.

Tennessee's 2013 Spring game had higher attendance (61,076) than 2013 Sugar Bowl (54,178)

Unlike Tennessee, they can afford to lose it.

It didn't help that it was in the middle of the week.

Most uninteresting BCS matchup ever.

Can't wait until the playoffs because Bowls can go back to picking who they want.

Why Florida why? Now us UK fans have to listen to Louisville fans crow about beating an SEC elite team. I don't get why Florida didn't show up for that game.

840K is cheap to UF Athletics and it's donation coffers..

Lville'e sodomy and pistol-whipping of a no-show Gator bunch took much more.

Anyone else shocked by this? I'm utterly stunned. This is really a mystery for the ages. Florida has always had such diehard fans. Just look at the Panthers, Rays, Marlins, Heat, and Jaguars.

It was sad seeing UofL travel better than UF.

Was at the game, UF was owned on the field and in the seats. Sad sad sad
