We don't have him yet. He's a hot rumor right now but I agree, he looks really good on paper for sure.

I will be the first to admit that I don't know shite about college baseball but based off of your post I am pumped to have Lee and am extremely impressed by his credentials. It is very exciting to get someone who is an up and comer and thought of highly by the national baseball publications.

He's not ours yet.... He's the type of up & comer that the UGA program & fans would be happy with & he's ready to step up. I doubt we could lure a top tier coach away from a great program, but a mid-level successful Head Coach with the kinda pedigree(groomed by Tanner & a recruiting coordinator to boot) Monte Lee has is very attractive...

I'd rather go with someone like him instead of a current Asst. at one of the BB powerhouses...

Well, shite. I will just pretend that we have him so I can go into full meltdown mode if for some reason we don't land him.

Perno delivered some of the best seasons in UGA baseball but his losing record in the SEC over the last 5 years spells time for a change. You can't explain away that kind of a record on untimely injuries alone.

Article from Baseball America's Aaron Fitt...

If Georgia wants to make a major financial commitment, it might start by approaching some of college baseball’s most successful established head coaches, like Louisville’s Dan McDonnell, Virginia’s Brian O’Connor, TCU’s Jim Schlossnagle or Kent State’s Scott Stricklin. None of those coaches would be an easy hire, but Georgia has the resources to shoot for the moon. Mid-major head coaches like South Alabama’s Mark Calvi, UCF’s Terry Rooney, Samford’s Casey Dunn, Mercer’s Craig Gibson, Illinois State’s Mark Kingston or College of Charleston’s Monte Lee could also make intriguing targets.

I feel like McGarity wants to hit a home run with this hire. Really hope we start at the top

If we could pull Virginia’s Brian O’Connor, I'd buy Baseball season tix even tho I'd only make 6-8 games at the most...

Also hearing rumors about Doug Sisson, but he'd be the kinda hire that would prolly piss me off...

He played professionally for two seasons. He then served as a minor league manager for the Texas Rangers, Anaheim Angels, and Montreal Expos organizations, winning several championships and Manager of the Year awards. He served as the associate head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs baseball team in 2006 and 2007.

After coaching at Georgia, Sisson served as the field coordinator for the Royals' minor league system. He was promoted to the major league coaching staff prior to the 2011 season.

Brian O'Connor would be a huge get. Don't get your hopes up on that one, though

I'm really surprised he's still at Kent State considering they went to the CWS and sent Florida home from Omaha.

...but...but...but...I thought Dave resigned on his own will? {wink wink)

ATHENS-----University of Georgia head baseball coach David Perno has resigned his position effective immediately according to an announcement Monday by UGA Director of Athletics Greg McGarity.

Perno served 17 years on the Bulldog staff including the past 12 as the head coach. He led the program to three College World Series appearances including the 2008 CWS Finals and six total NCAA Regional appearances. He tallied a record of 390-335-1, winning Southeastern Conference titles in 2004 and 2008.

I have accepted David’s resignation and would like to express our appreciation to him for his numerous contributions to our baseball program over the last two decades as a player, assistant and head coach,” said McGarity. “David was a part of our baseball program when it won a national title and helped Georgia advance to the College World Series five times during his playing and coaching career. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors. He has been a great representative for UGA. We have begun the process of finding the next head coach to lead our program and will do so as quickly as possible.”

“It’s been a privilege to wear the Bulldog uniform and represent the University of Georgia as a player, assistant and head coach,” said Perno. “I love the University and, I’m very appreciative of the many players, coaches, and support staff with whom I’ve had the opportunity to work with in Athens. I would like to thank Coach Vince Dooley for providing me with the opportunity of a lifetime because it was a dream come true to lead the Georgia program. I’d like to thank Dr. Michael Adams for his support during his tenure. And I’d like to tell all my former and current players that I love them and appreciate all that they have done for this program. Finally, I want to thank the wonderful fans who shared in our success at Foley Field.”

Perno’s teams advanced to the College World Series in 2004, 2006 and 2008. Overall, they made NCAA Regional appearances in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Georgia’s best finishes were second in 2008, tied for third in 2004 and tied for seventh in 2006. Thirty-one former Bulldogs under Perno have played professional baseball with five in the Major Leagues in 2013. He was a member of Georgia’s 1990 national championship team and was an assistant under Ron Polk when the Bulldogs won the 2001 SEC title and advanced to Omaha for the CWS. A native of Athens, he was a three-year letterman for Georgia from 1988-91, returned as an assistant coach in 1996 and was named head coach in July of 2001.

No assistants or recruiting coordinators. We can TAKE a head coach from another program. We have the resources, the appeal, power and MONEY that will lure a good head coach. The bad thing about Perno is the allure of next years team.He knew that he had a really good group for next year and they could be really good.

Another typical Georgia class. Went to see Redan and Troup county play in the final 4 today (game 3 tomorrow). The Redan SS is a UGA commit but will probably go in the top 3-5 rounds and probably won't make it to campus.also, Clit Frazier from loganville, No. 1 prospect in the country, committed to us, will never even think about stepping foot on campus.

He needs to recruit more kids that want to be on campus. James Ramsey, FSU outfielder that went in the first round last year, wanted to go to UGA. Perno wouldn't give him the time of day. Ramsey went on to being one of the best hitters FSU has ever had.

There are plenty of examples of this, point is, Perno gets caught up in the Perfect Game rankings and doesn't evaluate players very well. A new coach needs to have a different attitude when it comes to recruiting.

I'm late to the party on this, but this needed to happen. UGA should not suck at baseball.
