In outside sales so need something decent on gas but with a fair amount of room since it'll be my "road office".
Explorers good vehicles? If not, suggestions?

If you want a SUV, 4runners are great. Don't get anything jeep, had one, was in the shop once a month. All my friends with jeeps say the same. Depends on how much u can spend. Tahoes are good too.

Really?
We've had tons of Jeeps in my family and they have been top notch.
Our Suburban was trouble though.

I'd go with the later model Explorer if possible(current style). It's a completely different platform with an ecoboost option. If not, Toyota anything.
Wife has a 2007 Lincoln MKX and 6 hours in it is like 2 in a truck. It'll take care of your body for long rides. 110,000 with zero repairs to date.
Nissans are breaking left and right. They're made in Canton, MS so it doesn't surprise me..
The new Jeep is holding water. Has peculiar switch placement in the cabin (probably due to Mercedes engineering) but is getting good reviews. Looks good in the correct trim.
Ford trucks have been a staple of mine for ten years or so. I've taken them to 250,000 miles pulling boats, mud riding, etc before buying an alternator
I got faith in em..

Man you are like the second person I've ever heard say their jeep was fantastic. I had an 08 grand Cherokee and just got rid of it with 61,000 miles on it because every month it was in the shop. All I did was drive it to school, my apartment, and then back home to Georgia. Ac went out, had to replace the whole system, sunroof broke, power steering broke, tranny started slipping.

mpg is something I'm having to consider too seeing as how I'll prob end up putting 20-25k a year on it.
Newer models get better mileage?

I'd look at the edge first, if you travel a lot. Or hate to say such small one, the escape.

I think the new ones look like shite.

I have 2011 4 runner. If you keep the Eco light lit up on the dash board you can get 18-20mpg in town. So far the most I've gotten on the highway is 25mpg, but that's at 75-80mph.

I'd probably get a 2009 or 2010 model if I went with an Explorer

Man I like our Lincoln. It's the only vehicle I've ever made an 8 hour haul in and felt near rested / like getting off a light work day upon arrival..
Stay away from the GMC Acadia / Chev Traverse. These things are falling apart left and right.

That's older body style. I like those.
What's your budget?

I've been looking at cars between 10-15k. I get a company vehicle after a while then I'll upgrade.

Subaru, either Forester or Outback, will get you ~30mpg, always get great ratings, and hold their value really well.
ETA: 5 year cost of ownership is also way less than the Explorer and 4Runner. About even with the Rav4.

My company uses Ford. Decent in the oil field, fwiw. We drive the pool cars, both the two most recent explorer body style explorers are in the rotation. I like em.

And the explorer will be less. I was serious about the edge, there is a reason they are fleet vehicles for numerous companies.

You do not want the new Escape. I have one as a company car and I fill up every day. I swear it gets less than 300 to the tank, and has no storage space.

I haven't even thought about a Subaru
