An exerpt from a Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library article...A student in chemical engineering when the war started, Bob had been selected to receive training in chemical warfare at the University of Tennessee-until, as he said, “…they decided, we don’t really need college graduates, we need fresh cannon fodder. That’s you!”
So...UT offered him a little inspiration for Slaughterhouse Five

Charles Frazier, author- Cold Mountain. Though he went to undergrad at UNC, he has his PhD from USC and wrote the book while on campus in Columbia. That's gotta count.
