We just picked up one of the top prospects overall for the 2018 class. SS Blaze Alexander. Offers from Florida, Florida State, Miami, UNC and LSU. He'll be a Top50 overall player when that class is ranked by the sites.

Wasn't sure exactly where to post this...but since it's baseball related I'll drop it here. Seems we have a very unexpected fan of Carolina baseball.

Yeah I think he just likes the logo design. He likes to wear baseball caps when out in public, and he has a ton of caps of mostly college teams, but yeah he has worn the "SC" cap quite a lot. I think that pic was taken in 2010 when the Lakers were in the NBA Finals. That's Kevin Connolly from "The Entourage" beside him in the glasses....

That's pretty neat...and great free publicity for us. I didn't even notice Kevin Connolly next to him till you pointed it out. There was a pic I posted on here (can't remember what thread) that had Adam Sandler in it wearing a Gamecock T-shirt. Apparently he's a fan. Who knew?

A look at the baseball impact McIlwain will make, excited to see him out on the diamond as well. LINK /
Reportedly passed up at least 2 million as well, pretty sure that's the most by any recruit that came to play at USC. Shatters Wil Crowe's 1.2 million.

One of the elite athletes in the nation, Brandon McIlwain is a potential game changing talent at both the collegiate, and eventually the professional level. McIlwain shows true 60 power potential from the right side, generating excellent extension and natural lift in his stroke.
A plus runner capable of posting 6.5 60 yard dash times, McIlwain could have potentially gone off the board in the first 50 picks in the 2016 June draft... he could have been a very real candidate to go off the board in the first 25 picks, given his combination of speed and power. McIlwain has also shown that he handles advanced pitching very well, and could adapt very quickly at the collegiate level. His feel for hitting is the thing that scouts consistently bring up when it comes to this explosive young talent.
Though nothing is certain in college, McIlwain clearly has the tools to be an instant impact guy on both on the gridiron and baseball team.

Will McIlwain be the highest rated recruit we've ever signed that ALSO enrolled? Does anyone on here have a subscription to Perfect Game or Baseball America that could look at that?

I think Drew Meyer was in that range as well. I remember Tommy LaSorda flying in to Charleston to visit with his parents and him the night before he drove to Columbia and enrolled. I think, I'm pretty sure, he left $1.4 million on the table that night. I talked to his dad and him about it and that number seems right ... but I'm not sure. I know it was over a million.

Why We Should Make AT LEAST the Super Regionals This Year.
When Chad Holbrook was hired as HC in '12 he was one of the hottest names in HC candidate circles across the country. Our program was at an all time high and Ray Tanner pointed at Holbrook's recruiting efforts to be critical to that great run on CWS's we had. Nobody ever doubted Holbrook's ability to recruit, nor should they.
This year's team is probably the deepest team of talent SC has ever had, if you believe the recruiting site rankings.
Here are the Perfect Game Class Rankings since Holbrook took over in '12.
https://www.perfectgame.org/rankings/Recruiting/Rankings.aspx
(By the way, these are AFTER MLB rankings as well, so they don't count the players signed by MLB.)
'16 - #4 (not on campus yet unless they EE'd.) 5 Top 100 Commits, McIlwain EE
'15 - #8 3 Top 100 Commits
'14 - #3 2 Top 100 Commits
'13 - #3 1 Top 100 Commits
'12 - #9 2 Top 100 Commits
'11 - #1 4 Top 100 Commits
'15 (3 JUCO Top 100 Commits)
I did some research on the fall baseball roster. LINK
11 guys were drafted and offered contracts
9 were in the Top 100 of their class that year.
15 had an All American type of award
5 Players had all 3 (AA, Top100, Draft) 3 of the 5 were Pitchers, but 2 aren't available this season (Will Crowe and Cody Morris.)
With the '15 class we brought in 3 JUCO All Americans; 2 sluggers who got in on hitting and 1 stud Pitcher. We also got several great HS products who played for the EvoShield Canes club.
Also we only play 4 of the favored/ranked SEC teams this season.
https://www.gamecocksonline.com/sports/m-basebl/sched/scar-m-basebl-sched.html
It will not be easy to get to 40 wins, but it's do-able.
With all that said. It sucks that Morris and Crowe can't pitch this year, but we have enough talent to make it to the NCAAt and really enough talent to get to Super Regionals. Next year, with Crowe and Morris, we should have a CWS team, but if Holbrook can't even make it to Super's or at least Regionals, then he might not see that squad.

-- South Carolina is having a pitchers/catchers camp this weekend. Class of 2018 catcher commitment Charlie Welch will be in attendance to work with the coaching staff. There’s a chance there could be some prospects identified, especially on the mound, this weekend. At this camp last year, South Carolina took three commitments.
-- One player to keep an eye on at the camp is class of 2018 right-handed pitcher Casey Maniglia (Solon, Ohio/Solon), who is ranked No. 150 in the country in his class. South Carolina is supposedly his dream school, so if he performs well enough to get an offer, it may just be a matter of time before he commits.

Any idea which of these guys we need to worry about signing with MLB?
Posted on 6/9/16 at 2:05 pm to UpstateCock2007
Haire, Rizzo and Cortez. It is very likely Cortex and Rizzo sign MLB. We have a shot with Haire. IF Haire signs SC it will be on par with signing Wil Crowe, he is an All American Pitcher.

#Gamecocks signee Joe Rizzo goes to the Mariners in the second round with the 50th overall pick. Slot value is $1.25 million.

Cortez has tweeted that he's forgoing the draft and coming to USC!! May be why he was passed over in the top 10 rounds after being highly projected for the draft. He may have already told the scouts he wanted to play college ball.
Huge for the team, as he's a legit talent....

It is VERY likely that we get Cortez. This is a huge deal for our hitting next year, he's on par with Destino. The Mets might be able to work something out with him IF they get several guys drafted ahead of him to sign UNDER their cap space, but right now, I'm chalking him up as coming to SC.
I think Rizzo is the only guy we don't get from the project class, he was chosen #50 overall and will get a big signing bonus. He gone.
Haire is going to come in like Webb and immediately compete for a weekend starter role at Pitcher. He is a full year younger than most other college Freshman though. I think his low end Yr 1 will be a weekday starter. He won multiple All American Awards/Lists the past 3 years.
Jahn, Gregory and Bridges are 3 other really quality Pitchers coming in, but they may need a year or two to develop. Bridges throws heat though already in the mid 90's, so he's already on par from a mph standpoint with Webb.

2017 Perfect Game rankings for our guys (recently re-ranked)
No. 17 OF Kyle Jacobsen (Acworth, Ga./Allatoona) Ranked so high, no expecting him to sign, would be miracle level stuff if he did, total package, could play INF or OF, elite defense skills, great hitter,
No. 38 UTIL Noah Campbell (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) - Also a great student. we might have a shot to sign him
No. 42 RHP Hunter Ruth (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz) made the biggest ranking's jump, we'll fight UF and now MLB tooth and nail to have him sign with us.
No. 224 RHP Brady Scott (Powder Springs, Ga./Mt. Paran Christian)
No. 227 RHP Carmen Mlodzinski (Hilton Head/Hilton Head)
No. 255 LHP Tyler Mettetal (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North)
No. 330 RHP Shane Roberts (Jupiter, Fla./William T. Dwyer)
No. 394 LHP Chase Williamson (Lexington/Lexington)

JW at 247 thinks we're going to (at this point in time) sign all 3 of our Top50 guys:
No. 17 OF Kyle Jacobsen
No. 38 UTIL Noah Campbell
No. 42 RHP Hunter Ruth
If that happens that would be amazing. Personally, I'm always weary of us signing any Top50 guys b/c often they're drafted in the top 10 Rds.
We need to do whatever is necessary to keep Coach Jerry Meyers. He's put together another elite and Pitching class for '17. He identified rising Pitchers early and several of them shot up the rankings this year or earned AA Honors.
No. 42 RHP Hunter Ruth - shot up 154 spots int he rankings.
Then these guys below all moved up a good bit in the rankings.
No. 224 RHP Brady Scott (Powder Springs, Ga./Mt. Paran Christian) He's 6'6" 260 lbs and only getting stronger.
No. 227 RHP Carmen Mlodzinski(Hilton Head/Hilton Head) Has a top 3% FB for HS RHP's.
No. 255 LHP Tyler Mettetal (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North)
No. 330 RHP Shane Roberts (Jupiter, Fla./William T. Dwyer)
No. 394 LHP Chase WIlliamson (Lexington/Lexington) - has a top 1% FB for HS LHP's, and went from an Honorable Mention to 3rd Team Underclassmen All American. JW thinks the way his stock is moving that he might sign an MLB contract before our Top50 guys.
Meyers is bringing in some power Lefty's and elite Pitchers who are going to make sure the '16 to '17 season's production isn't a complete dropoff. (We'll be Elite in Pitching nationally in '16 with Schmidt, Crowe, Hill, Johnson, Haire and company, but Schmidt and Crowe (and possibly Johnson) are most likely leaving after '16.) Meyers is probably one of the best recruiting and coaching Pitching Coaches in college ball.

OF Clark Scolamiero is transferring. Kinda unexpected, but he was passed on the depth chart this season by younger players, so it makes sense. He was a starter at the beginning of the season. I think he still has a RS year so he should have 3 to play 2.
