There was an interesting debate about Derrick Thomas yesterday on WJOX in Birmingham. They were comparing Thomas's collegiate career with that of Brian Bosworth. One host argued that even though Thomas had one of the best single seasons a linebacker has ever had in the history of college football, Bosworth had a better total collegiate career. Of course, Thomas obviously had the better NFL career and is undoubtedly remembered more favorably in both CFB and the NFL.

Thoughts?

Hard to argue with that host's opinion. Bosworth did win the Butkus award twice and was a absolute force in college. Thomas had possibly the best single season for LB in history, but I could buy that Bosworth was more productive throughout his college career. I don't know the stats.

Wasn't he disqualified from a game in college for steroids though? I thought I remembered that as one of his big controversies.

Yes. Overall, I would think Thomas was the better player and teammate. It's just unfortunate that he happened to play for Ray Perkins.
