I mean his coaching was sort of suspect but he was a great character.
He's now the DC of McMurray University in Abilene, TX. He was also a high school coach in Memphis for a few years.

He fielded the #1 defense in the nation as DC at MSU in 99. He fielded many top 25 defenses at MSU during his tenure.

Mainly talking about after his MSU defenses. What happened?

May single-handedly be responsible for Jim McMahon not being able to remember where he parked his car.

He also fielded the number 1 defense in the nation at Ole Miss in the early 90s.
Think about that, 2 different #1 Ds at OM and State.

Memphis killed his career, like so many before and since.

every telecast they used to remind us he didn't wear socks.

He was an assistant at UT Chattanooga while my dad was there.

Invented, or if not, certainly coined the phrase "blitz them getting off the bus."

His lack of socks and ever increasing beer gut somehow led to teams figuring his schemes out

I'm pretty sure he invented the 4-2-5
Eta: meant the 3-3-5

In short, if he had the db's to go one on one, he could still be an elite DC, but if he doesn't he gives up all the points anyone could possibly score....But great guy to listen to, very entertaining!!!!

Yeah with elite DBs and an elite nose tackle it might be the most effective defense

He almost beat the Vols in Hotlanta with zero help on offense.
OB why put UTM on your sweep list. That's like putting a Juco or club team or a good high school on your list. Heard Dyersburg State needed a weekend series.

I remember him. Think he's from Columbus GA, and the main thing I remembered about his coaching style is BLITZ NOW BLITZ OFTEN.

He invented the 3-5-3 defense. Joe Lee was a fanatic and master of the LB blitz, and pretty much every college program he's been at his defenses have at least for certain periods been ranked among the nation's best...
Dunn has been working at several programs under Head Coach Hal Mumme. Mumme brought him to be his DC at New Mexico State, and after getting fired there and then hired to be the HC at Div. III McMurray University...
Dunn's first college coaching job was at his alma mater Tennessee-Chattanooga. He was an assitant there when the Mocs hired a young Head Coach named Joe Morrison. Morrison coached at Tenn.-Chattanooga from 1973 through 1979, then moved up as head coach of New Mexico. He brought Dunn with him to Albuquerque as his DC. In 1982 Morrison and Dunn led the Lobos to a 10-1 record, and Morrison was hired as new HC at South Carolina. Dunn replaced Morrison as HC at New Mexico for 3 years, leading the Lobos to a 17-30 record, and was subsequently let go...
Dunn then re-joined Morrison at USC as his DC and served in his staff for 2 seasons. Coach Morrison passes away in '89 to heart failure, and new HC Sparky Woods does not retain Dunn, opting to bring in his staff from his previous post at App. State.
So even Gamecock fans have some personal experiences with Joe Lee...

Ahh, I was wrong: it's the 3-3-5 mentioned above, and not the 3-5-3, that Dunn is known for...

I like Joe Kines and his dedication to stopping the Inside Trout better.

Dang it guys, it was the 5-3-3 that he invented.
ETA: Crap, sorry. It was the 3-3-5!
