Wasn't there a famous strong man from Auburn (funny last name that escapes me)?

Bill Kazmeier. Won World's Strongest Man competitions a few times in the 80s. Didn't actually go to Auburn, but lives here and ran Kaz Fitness until his ex-wife got it in the divorce. Now runs S.W.A.T. Gym in Opelika.
