Indeed it is, El Paso is actually closer to Los Angeles, CA than it is to Houston, TX. The ginormity of this state always blows my mind.

It's apparently a done deal. If so, he'll be back playing against A&M November 2nd.

I'm assuming he'll be sitting in the stands since he'll be sittin' out the year...Are y'all doing a home & home so he will get to play against aTm?

Graduates this summer. As long as he is in a Masters program at UTEP that A&M doesn't offer, he still has 2 years of eligibility left.

For those of us who didn't know the name of the TAMU backup QB...Given that the title started with A&M and had showering in it I thought this was going to be some homo attack of TAMU.

I always thought he had a ton of potential and could have been great

I still think he has a better arm and ball than JFF but he lacks the mobility and "it" factor. He is a very good QB.

Best of luck to him.

He graduates this year (RS Sophomore who early enrolled and went to Summer school every year) and thus doesn't have to sit out. Same thing happened with Garrett Gilbert from Texas to SMU this past season. He graduated in the Spring and enrolled at SMU in the Fall and is getting his Masters while playing last year and still eligible for this year.

I don't know any Aggies that hold ill will toward Showers, he was a class guy all the way and handled losing the starting job to Manziel as well as you could ever hope. The guy is a legit NFL prospect and deserves a chance to show it. He's got great size and is mobile with decent speed but most importantly he has a bonafide NFL arm. He throws a beautiful spiral and can fling it 70 yards without issue. It would be a shame if he never got a shot because he played behind Manziel.

It's becoming more common for athletes to do this, esp QB's. If you enroll Mid Term and go to Summer sessions you can graduate in 3 years. It's attractive to QB's especially because the rotation is so limited but they like to get on campus earlier so they can learn the system. Manziel could probably graduate next Spring if he wants to but obviously he isn't looking to transfer. There was also speculation about Matt Joekel (Luke's brother) who is in a similar circumstance as Showers but apparently Matt is loving life too much in CS and he isn't nearly the NFL prospect that Showers is.

Yeah, the dude was excellent when I saw him in action. Question: who is the backup now and how good is the next QB in line? The way Johnny plays is almost like the old wishbone philosophy of you better have 2 good QBs ready to play. How do you feel about the backup and who is he going to be?

Here is another odd fact, El Paso is West of Santa Fe, New Mexico and about as far West as Albuquerque!

Metro Atlanta (what people would generally refer to as Atlanta) has more than 5 million people.

Good luck to Jameil! I hope he does well at UTEP.

El Paso is an interesting and charming place that most Texans forget about. I've enjoyed all my visits out there and UTEP has a beautiful campus.

That drive out there is killer though. I've driven a few times from SF to SA and back. You can easily make El Paso from the Bay Area. My advice though is to stay there. Fort Stockton seems like it's close but it is not.

I know - tldr, csb, etc.

I was listening to local sports radio this morning. UTEP has a new coaching staff that is going to design their offense around Jameill. He should really have a chance to shine for the next two years. I wish him all the best.

I don't dispute the number, but I sure don't call this:

"Atlanta", and that's where the > 5 million population comes from.

The current listed backup is Matt Joekel who played some last year. Joekel is a solid backup in terms of a guy that can come out and run the offense, make the throws, and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He is a big dude but kind of slow (definitely not a dual threat and about 60lbs lighter than his brother Luke) and has a somewhat slow release though. In other words he is a guy who isn't going to lose games for you but he's not going to win a bunch of games for you either.

The next in line is RS Frosh Matt Davis. Matt has tremendous physical talent with a strong arm, great size, and excellent speed. He was very raw last year though and struggled to pick up the offense. In his defense with the QB competition that was going on and him coming in as a Fish that had no realistic shot against Manziel or Showers he didn't get a ton of reps. The guy is famous for his super positive attitude though and starting the "AggSwagg" movement in the '12 recruiting class to help land several top guys and change the perception about A&M. He also is clearly working hard on his craft based on info I have seen, the question is if how far he has come and how far will he come?

There are 2 Freshman QB's coming in with Kohl Stewart and Kenny Hill who were both 4 Stars. Stewart has a ton of talent but is a major MLB risk where he projects as a Top 10 pick. Hill is someone to really watch. He ran essentially the exact same offense at powerhouse HS Southlake Carroll (winning a State Title as a Jr) and is a great athlete (Dad was a MLB pitcher as well). You would never want to rely on a True Fish but Hill is a guy that is probably the favorite to succeed Manziel eventually based on who is signed or on campus.

Still, any way you slice it if we lose Manziel this season we are likely losing at least 2 more games than if we had him. You can't replace a guy with his talent without a dropoff. The hope is that with our recruiting we can have enough talent around the next guy to make up for it.
