Sure it is. So time 'em at 5 yards or 10. 40 is meaningless.
They have an electronic eye every 10 yards, I think. So their splits are part of the info gathered on them. Just because the NFLN only cares about the 40 time doesn't mean that's the only data they're gathering.
So you were saying?

Great time by Swope 4.44
Would love to see Swope still sitting there at the 14th pick of the 2nd round when the Panthers pick.

@LSUFreek: Onterio McCalebb officially ran a 4.34, not 4.21 as first thought. However he's the favorite to set a record in the run-out-of-bounds drill

Knile's stock is soaring right now I saw him as a 3-5 rounder. Now i see him as a 2-3 rounder. Putting up the bench reps, 40 time at 230 is ridiculous. He's the most physically impressive RB at the combine and you have some great film on him from 2 seasons ago when he was a beast. Could be a steal for someone in the mid rounds.

When do you see a RB/WO with their hand in the dirt. I would rather see em time them after 5-10 yrds.

True.

Is OM going to be a sproles type in the league or strictly a return specialist. Ford at 4.5 is allright thought it would have been around 4.45.
More like a Dexter McCluster, Sproles can take on tacklers and could break them too. OMac not so much
Yep, totally different body-shape.
Sproles is a muscle-filled bowling ball.
If there was any other position that McCalleb could play other than kick returner and third-down back, it's be at slot receiver. He's got good hands.

This is absurd. Do you want the NFL to turn into the arena league and let the WRs get a 5 yard running start? 1 of the most important thing that makes a good WR/RB is how fast can they get out of their stance and moving forward for a RB and how fast a WR can get off the line and get past the DB. The first few steps. And can you guess what split NFL scouts look at? Its the starting split. It shows how quick they can get out of the stance and how many steps it takes them to get to top speed.
Rarely in football do you see plays go over 25 yards. The average yards per play in the NFL last season was around 5.3yds. Its a stop and go type of game, which is exactly what the 40 shows. Letting them get a running start would only show the player at top speed, and there arent many plays where you would be at top speed in the NFL. Sure, there are deep plays. But, they all start with the players at a stand still.
Totally agree about Knile Davis being good in the pros. If he can get into the right system and work on the fumbles, he will be damn good.

I know 4.91 isn't my best time. The goal was to show I'm healthy in the drills and I was the only TE to not drop a pass.

When 40-yard times are announced the next few days from the NFL scouting combine, there are a few things that should be kept in perspective.
First, there is no single "official" 40 time at the combine.
That said, Bo Jackson has the best verifiable time at a combine with his 4.12-second clocking at the Louisiana Superdome in 1986.

He's just trying to get paid, reminding everyone why his numbers might not be up to par.. I don't see anything wrong with it.. He's got a career to interview for. I'm sure you don't hype yourself up when trying to get a job, do you?
