Where does the name Mizzou come from?

Does anyone know why Missouri abbreviates their name as MIZZ? I never understood that. I know it's short for Mizzou, but why not Missou?

It's spelled the way it sounds phonetically. What do you not understand about this?

According to www.missouri.edu, no one is sure about the origin of the nickname Mizzou. The first known use of the word was in the Missouri Alumni Quarterly in 1906.
According to facultycouncil.missouri.edu, one of the names that the University of Missouri was known as in the early 1900s was Missouri State University. Pronouncing the initials (MSU) would sound like mi-zoo.

Mizzou does not abbreviate the name MIZZ. That's ESPN. The university would prefer the full Mizzou on the ticker/scoreline.

We used to be Missouri State University. Abbreviating to MSU and saying it phonetically makes a Mizzou sound. We changed to University of Missouri but kept the nickname. There are still some markings on campus that refer to us as Missouri State University though.

Why spell it Thibodeaux? Why not spell it Tibado?
