Should Clowney Sit Out 2013?

Tom Sorenson asked the question, what does it benefit Jadeveon Clowney to play in 2013?
Florio of PFT states that Clowney is in a lose/lose situation of risking injury or lowering draft stock by not playing with both scenerios decreasing his draft value

If grown men can’t remember their middle names 10 years after they leave the league, what do you think will happen to those 160-pound, teenaged tailbacks who thrive in college? The NFL plays hardball. As dominant as Alabama was last season, the Crimson Tide would lose by double figures to the NFL’s worst team.
But Clowney is 6-foot-6 and 256 pounds. If you believe in free enterprise, on what grounds do you tell a player physically ready to compete that, for his own good, he won’t be allowed to?
If you’re Clowney, what do you do? Give the school everything you have and try to upend the Crimson Tide?
Play not to get hurt?
Or sign with an agent, get assigned coaches and trainers and spend the season pumping up and preparing for the pros?
If Clowney doesn’t return to Columbia, South Carolina would be cheated.
At the moment, only Clowney is.

Of course, an unconventional decision to not play football this year could impact the manner in which NFL teams regard Clowney. Apart from the fact that he’d be out of sight for 2013, some coaches and scouts may have concerns about a guy whose love of football has been overcome by his own financial interests.

Not having the lifelong stigma of sitting out tough situations to save himself for later. Why would a team draft a guy like that if in crunch time of a big game he might say "don't wanna risk my health, I'm gonna go ahead and rest up for next sunday"
And how much resting up does he really have to do, the shelf life of a super productive NFL player, in a GOOD scenario is what..like 10 years? Tom Sorenson sounds like a douche.

The whole story is a method for instituting the same policies that have screwed the college basketball world.
One and done would likely cause a drop in talent like has happened in the basketball world. Not only should football not change, basketball should more closely align with the football rules.

It's not unprecendented.
Clowney sat out for the LSU game last year.

The same problem is faced by many collegiate athletes each year. It is what it is and he plays.

Maybe he should. If he gets Lattimore'd and destroys his knee he will lose millions

Someone tried to make this point with Mark Ingram sitting out back in '11. Just because of his Heisman year, and his surgery in the offseason had yet to happen.
Quinton Coples admitted he played his last year at UNC as to avoid injury.

No. Sam Bradford got hurt and still went number 1.

Take out an insurance plan. I heard Tebow was insured for $1 mil and that was 5 or 6 years ago. Clowney could probably take one out for $5 mil or more, given his value.

quote:Try and rewrite the NCAA record books. If he wants to become a legend, he needs to strive to play to his utmost ability. The number 1 pick (and possibly the Heisman) is within his grasp.
If you’re Clowney, what do you do?

He has to play like a man.
If Lattimore is going to be drafted it would take an extreme freak injury to stop Clowney from going in Round 1
